Walked trails tonight at KAW and by tomorrow all will be good to go (except upper Menninger). I ran into a non-member tonight and they were asking about damage to trails. We had a good discussion and I hope that the user better understood how damage to trails occur. The picture attached shows damage to the upper Menninger trail as it exists today at the KAW. There are the obvious tire marks, dog tracks and foot tracks but there is additional damage going on.....for illustration....the blue lines on this picture represent the original width and track of the trail the yellow area shows where users have tried to avoid the issue on the trail by going in the grass around the trail damaged area. As you can see this has clearly widened the trail (almost double) which is considered as trail damage. This damaged has altered the erosional patterns and creates more maintenance area that will have to be worked on (hopefully to restore the trail to its original track and width). This type of damage takes TCTA time to repair when time could better be spent working on improving our trail system. Please if a trail is muddy or as posted "please stay off the upper Menninger trail" then please respect that request. If you have to go through a muddy spot please don't just go around and widen the trail...get off your bike and walk through the area or better yet turn around. There are plenty of other trails at the KAW to ride that are good to go. Thank you for reading this post and learning about how to reduce damage during freeze and thaw cycles to our trail system. TCTA appreciates your support and respect of the trail systems. ...
